Description

Natural Talents showcases the juicy, funky, delightful natural process. The sweetest and most fruit-forward coffees are processed naturally, and we’re excited to offer this exclusive microlot. This coffee is loud and unapologetic. We love it on drip, espresso, and pour-over.

This is our first coffee purchased through our relationship with Cosecha Coffee Traders,  a social impact enterprise that supports smallholder farmers in vulnerable regions of southwestern Colombia. Although we cupped several coffees, this natural blew us away on the cupping table. We’d been looking for a new natural single origin for some time. Many were well balanced and enjoyable, but we wanted one that was powerful and unmistakable. We knew it was this as soon as we tasted it.

A naturally processed coffee is sometimes referred to as “sun-dried.” The coffee cherries are picked off the trees and sun dried in the fruit, before being mechanically depulped. For decades in years past this was considered a lesser process, reserved for low grade coffees. Over the last 15 years, higher grade naturals have become available and popular with folks who enjoy fruitier coffees.

The producer, Francisco, is young for a coffee farmer. His young mentality led him to innovate and take risks (such as process an entire lot naturally and push the flavor profile further than is traditionally advisable). Francisco believes a coffee farmer must have an open mind and be perseverant and we couldn’t agree more… but as roasters we need be present to lend a helping hand when things don’t exactly go according to plan. As such, this coffee was a happy accident: the processing in Colombia didn’t exactly go according to plan, and we agreed to purchase the entire lot despite there being many dried whole coffee cherries distributed through the bags. For us, there was never a question. This coffee was worth it.
